Charles County, MD Climate Adaptation Assessment

UMCES-IAN partnered with the Charles County Resilience Authority to develop adaptation indicators to measure county-level preparedness for the most urgent climate threats. We developed a novel approach of evaluating adaptation alongside vulnerabilities to help decision-makers prioritize what actions are most urgently needed.

Recently, the county began efforts to improve parks; this addresses the need for improved park equity, as identified in the Report Card, to better enable county residents to withstand heat events and maintain microclimates. To aid in more local resilience planning and decision-making, we assessed some indicators of adaptation at the sub-watershed level, as well as the county level, revealing not just the greatest adaptation and resilience needs, but also where these needs are greatest.
